Knowing that many people think carefully about who controls information is exactly the kind of foundation needed to shift who holds power over it. In the last few months we've seen frontier AI companies building new alliances to shape how AI use evolves in our societies. Which is why we need to be thinking about relationships and knowledge sharing between organisations who understand this technology, use it for better ends, and aren't just thinking commercially. In other words — you. --- ### THE NEW FRONT PAGE For most of the last century, if you wanted to understand the world you read the paper, listened to the radio and watched the news. The journalists in the middle weren't perfect, but they were a filter you could see. That filter is being replaced by one you can't. AI is becoming the primary filter of information in our lives, and it is doing it faster than most institutions have noticed. A small number of increasingly wealthy companies have hoovered up a huge chunk of the world's information and are regurgitating it to us for profit — changing how we communicate. In this world more than ever, the more information an institution holds, the more power it has over the rest of us. The public and third sectors have almost always been a step behind on technology adoption, but we believe now is a bad time to opt out. So, what can we do? Shifting information power isn't something anyone can do alone. That's why Rootcause ran a [Summer School](https://rootcause.global/blog/rootcause-summer-school-roundup?ref=rootcause.ghost.io) this August and why we're restarting this newsletter. ****DEVIL'S ADVOCATE** **Is a handful of AI companies holding the world's information really so different from the small group of media barons who decided, for most of the last century, what counted as news? And isn't information now more open, more abundant and more democratised than at any point in history?* That old system was far from perfect but at least its gatekeepers had some rules to follow. The distance between people and knowledge has never been shorter. But abundance isn't power. Being able to access information is not the same as being able to shape what everyone else sees — and that power still sits with a very small number of companies.
